The Project
This impressive manor house in Hampshire has undergone a full renovation, with the aim of preserving its original character while carefully integrating new elements across the property and grounds.
Built in the 19th century using predominantly British materials, the brief was to ensure that any additions felt completely in keeping with the existing building. The result is a cohesive, thoughtfully designed space where traditional materials play a central role throughout the landscaping.
Across the grounds, Old Reclaimed York Flagstones were used for the main paving, with Reclaimed Street Setts and Chalk Knapped Flint incorporated into key features including pathways, walling, and steps.
Why These Materials Work
Reclaimed materials are a natural fit for projects like this, where the goal is to retain a sense of history and authenticity.
The Old Reclaimed York Flagstones bring a depth of character that can’t be replicated with new stone. Their worn surfaces and subtle variation in tone allow them to sit effortlessly alongside the original building, making the newer areas feel established rather than recently added.
The Reclaimed Street Setts add further detail, particularly when used to edge pathways and form gentle curves through the landscape. Their variation in size and colour creates a more natural, informal finish, while also helping to define spaces.
Chalk Knapped Flint completes the palette, used within walling panels and as step risers. The contrast between the dark flint faces and pale mortar gives a sharp, traditional look that ties in perfectly with the architectural style of the property.
The Result
The finished grounds feel as though they have always belonged to the property. Every material has been chosen not just for its appearance, but for how it contributes to the overall setting.
A standout feature is the outdoor kitchen and dining area, complete with a brick and flint pizza oven. Set against the reclaimed York stone paving, it creates a warm, inviting space that blends seamlessly into the wider landscape and has become a key area for entertaining.
The level of craftsmanship throughout the project is clear to see, from the precise use of flint in the walling to the careful placement of setts around curves and edges. The result is a timeless, characterful finish that enhances the original manor house and ensures the entire space feels consistent, balanced, and built to last.
