The Challenge
The homeowners of this beautiful property in Reading wanted to create an entirely new entrance and driveway to approach their home. Rather than using the existing route, they planned a new drive running through the fields, creating a more fitting and impressive arrival to the property.
From the outset, they were looking for something with history and character. After discovering reclaimed setts, they contacted Miles Stone to explore the possibilities. Because reclaimed materials vary in size and depth, and require careful installation, we were able to recommend R. H. Hammond & Sons, specialists experienced in restoring listed buildings and working with traditional materials.
The Build
This was a full build from the ground up. The existing ground was excavated and prepared to form a strong and stable sub-base suitable for vehicular traffic. For a driveway of this scale, correct preparation is essential to ensure long-term durability and prevent movement over time.
Several tonnes of reclaimed setts were delivered to site. Each piece, varying slightly in depth and dimension, had to be individually selected and placed by hand. This is a far more involved process than laying uniform modern paving, requiring careful adjustment to achieve consistent levels and a smooth finished surface while maintaining the natural variation that gives reclaimed stone its charm.
The driveway gradually took shape, with the setts laid tightly together to create a robust, interlocked surface capable of withstanding daily vehicle use. Seeing the installation in progress highlighted the craftsmanship involved, every sett contributing to the overall pattern and strength of the drive.
The Outcome
The finished driveway is both striking and sympathetic to its surroundings. The reclaimed setts offer a beautiful mix of tones, soft greys, warm browns, and subtle charcoal hues, with slight differences in size and shape that create an authentic, rustic finish.
The smooth, timeworn surfaces tell a story of their previous life, giving the driveway a sense of permanence. It looks newly laid, yet feels as though it has always belonged there. The natural variation ensures that light plays across the surface differently throughout the day, adding depth and texture to the approach.
The result is a grand but understated entrance that perfectly complements the property and landscape. The customer was thrilled with the transformation, a driveway built to last for generations, combining traditional craftsmanship with timeless materials.
