The Challenge
The client wanted to introduce the soothing sound and movement of running water into their garden but without the commitment and upkeep that comes with a traditional pond. The goal was to create a peaceful, natural feature that would blend seamlessly with the surrounding garden while remaining safe, practical, and easy to maintain.
The Build
The project was designed and built by Richard Pack Landscaping, who specialises in creating naturalistic garden features. The process began with clearing the existing area and excavating the space to shape the form of the stream. A protective liner was laid to ensure proper water containment and flow before construction began.
The stream itself was built using Purbeck Rockery to form the structure and shape of the feature, with Purbeck Chippings used to dress the base and edges for a cohesive, natural finish. A reclaimed Yorkstone slab was carefully placed across the stream to form a small bridge — a standout detail that doubles as a crossing point and focal feature.
The result is a pondless Aquascape that offers the movement, sparkle, and calming sound of running water, but without the need for an exposed pond. Once completed, the system runs quietly and efficiently, requiring minimal maintenance.
The Outcome
The finished feature feels like a natural stream gently weaving through the garden. The varied textures and tones of the Purbeck stone and reclaimed Yorkstone give it a timeless, organic appearance that fits beautifully within the landscape.
For the homeowner, the project delivers all the serenity of a traditional pond, the sound of flowing water, the reflections, and the sense of calm, but with the benefit of a low-maintenance design that’s easy to care for year-round.
