The Challenge
The homeowners in Lee-on-the-Solent wanted to completely transform their tired garden into something fresh, calm, and low maintenance. The original space featured ageing concrete slabs and grass that required constant upkeep. They wanted to replace this with a garden that offered visual interest from every angle — a mix of natural charm and clean modern design, with areas to relax and enjoy the view.
The Build
The project began by removing the old concrete paving and grassed areas, giving the garden a blank canvas. A new pond was installed using a pre-formed liner, with the surrounding area built up using a blend of Glacial Cobbles and Scottish Cobbles to create a natural, soft-edged finish.
Across the rest of the garden, Black Ice Chippings were laid to provide a crisp, low-maintenance surface, punctuated with pockets of planting and scattered cobbles for texture and balance. Around the pond and throughout the beds, larger Glacial Cobbles were positioned to add structure and a natural flow through the space.
Leading from the house, a generous seating area was paved with Alexandria Egyptian Limestone, bringing a warm buff tone and a smooth, elegant surface that contrasts beautifully with the darker stone in the rest of the garden. The patio is bordered with Alexandria Setts, forming a neat divide between the paved and graveled sections.
The same design approach was carried through to the front of the property, where Black Ice Chippings and Glacial Boulders replaced the grass, framing a small ornamental tree and tying both areas together perfectly.
The Outcome
The finished garden is a stunning example of balance — combining the natural, rustic feel of cobbles and chippings with the clean, contemporary finish of limestone paving. The design takes inspiration from Japanese gardens, where simplicity, texture, and calm are central themes. The pond, smooth cobbles, and soft planting create a sense of tranquility, while the Alexandria limestone patio provides a warm, elegant contrast.
The low-maintenance layout allows the homeowners to enjoy their space without the need for constant upkeep, while the carefully placed features ensure there’s always something new to notice from every angle. Designed entirely by the customers themselves, and refined over several visits and deliveries, the result is a garden that feels peaceful, balanced, and perfectly personal.
