The Challenge
Southampton City Council needed a practical solution to ongoing issues at a council-owned estate in Bursledon. Vehicles were parking on grass verges, blocking access, and trespassing into areas where traffic should not have been allowed. Traditional barriers or fencing were not considered suitable, as they would require ongoing maintenance and could appear out of place in a residential setting. The council required something robust, effective, and sympathetic to the environment.
The Build
After consultation, it was agreed that natural stone boulders would provide the ideal answer. In total, a mixed selection of 27 boulders were delivered and installed:

7 large boulders weighing around 2 tonnes each

5 medium boulders weighing between 500kg and 1 tonne
-
15 smaller boulders weighing around 250kg each
The variety in size allowed the placement to feel natural while still creating an effective barrier. Over two days, our truck was used to carefully position each boulder under the direction of the council. Boulders were placed along roadsides and grass verges, with spacing designed to prevent vehicles from squeezing through while maintaining a visually appealing layout.
The Outcome
The finished result is a series of strategically positioned Purbeck boulders that control traffic and prevent unauthorised parking without detracting from the appearance of the estate. The natural stone blends well into the surrounding landscape, offering a long-term, low-maintenance alternative to manmade barriers.
Southampton City Council were pleased with the outcome, gaining a reliable and attractive solution to a persistent problem. With the boulders now in place, residents benefit from safer, tidier shared spaces free from unwanted vehicle damage.
