The Challenge
In Rustington, a housing association was facing ongoing problems with vehicles parking on grassed areas. Repeated use had left the lawns damaged, muddy, and unsightly, and traditional deterrents such as posts or barriers were either unsuitable or unlikely to last. They approached Miles Stone looking for a solution that was effective, durable, and sympathetic to the surroundings.
The Build
After exploring the options, the decision was made to install 66 Purbeck boulders, each weighing around 500kg. These were chosen not only for their size and strength, but also for their natural appearance, which would allow them to blend into the landscaped setting.
The logistics involved three truckloads of boulders, delivered loose and tipped into a single pile on site. From there, our yard manager used a Manitou over two days to carefully place each boulder in its designated spot. The work required patience and precision to ensure the stones were evenly spaced, preventing vehicles from passing between them, while still maintaining an attractive and natural layout.
As part of the service, our team also repaired the lawn areas affected by tyre tracks during the delivery process, leaving the site tidy and ready to recover quickly.
The Outcome
The end result is a neat and practical barrier formed by substantial Purbeck boulders, placed at intervals around the grassed areas. They provide a permanent solution to unwanted parking while enhancing the look of the site. Unlike alternatives such as wooden posts or tree stumps, the boulders will not rot, crumble, or require regular replacement.
The housing association was very pleased with the outcome, gaining a solution that is both robust and visually appealing. The Purbeck boulders now serve as a long-term safeguard for the lawns while adding character to the landscape.
