A Mediterranean-Inspired

Garden Makeover

The Challenge

The homeowners wanted to breathe new life into their outdoor spaces, which included a worn patio, an unused courtyard, and a large area of plain lawn. Their vision, led by designer Susanne Boswell, was to create a Mediterranean-inspired garden. This style embraces warm tones, textured stonework, and inviting spaces for socialising, often softened with abundant planting. The goal was to blend beauty and function, creating a relaxed yet elegant setting that could be enjoyed throughout the seasons.

The Build

Work began with the removal of the old patio, courtyard surfacing, and any redundant edging or concrete. This created a blank canvas for the redesign. The ground was prepared to ensure a strong, level base for the new materials.

Using our Haycroft Building Stone, new walls were built to introduce structure, shape the layout, and create raised areas where steps now lead. These walls not only define the space but also bring a timeless, rustic texture that complements the overall style.

The pathways were created using Alexandria Setts (200 x 50 x 40 mm), each one individually placed by hand. This detailed work required precision and patience, ensuring perfectly aligned lines that guide you through the garden. On either side of the pathways, spacious seating areas were laid with Alexandria Natural Paving, matching the warm tones of the setts for a seamless look.

In the courtyard, the design was refreshed to match the main garden, with neat edges and a smooth connection between spaces. Leftover Haycroft stone was cleverly reused as subtle rockery features within the gravel beds, giving texture and tying the whole project together.

The Outcome

The finished garden is a beautifully connected space with multiple areas for relaxing and entertaining. The Alexandria setts form elegant walkways that link the courtyard and main patio, guiding visitors through borders filled with vibrant planting.

A personal highlight is the pair of painted beehives, nestled among the flowers, a charming touch suggested by Susanne Boswell, adding both colour and personality to the design. The reuse of Haycroft stone in the courtyard beds creates a natural link back to the main structural elements while adding extra detail at ground level.

The result is a Mediterranean-inspired retreat that feels inviting, cohesive, and full of character, a transformation that celebrates both style and craftsmanship.
