Moments of Reflection
We’re proud to share that Miles Stone played a part in this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, supplying stone for the Monument Garden, titled Moments of Reflection. Designed by Maximillian Design and built by the talented team at Hardwood Landscapes, the garden stood as a moving and beautifully crafted tribute, and we were honoured to be involved.
Brecon Building Stone
When the team behind the garden visited our site, they were looking for a natural material that would tie into the strength and sentiment of the design. After exploring our yard, they chose our Brecon building stone, a striking Welsh sandstone with rich red and green tones.
Sourced from Wales, this natural building stone is beautifully cropped and full of character, shaped by over 400 million years of history. Its durability and distinctive colour made it the perfect choice for a project centred around reflection, time, and timelessness.
Gecko Stonework at Miles Stone
To bring the walling element of the garden to life, Paul Cheetham from Gecko Stonework was brought in to shape and prepare the stone. He and his team spent several weeks at our yard working alongside Jude, carefully selecting, dressing, and organising each individual piece from several tonnes of raw Brecon Stone.
This wasn’t simply stacking stone. It was measured, intentional craftsmanship — each piece shaped by hand, each one finding its perfect place in the larger design. We also got to witness Paul splitting large Brecon boulders to create “jumpers,” longer stones designed to span multiple courses within a dry stone wall. The level of detail and care was exceptional.
More Than Just One Stone
While Brecon building stone formed the centerpiece, it was also used throughout the garden to construct the surrounding walling, creating a strong, cohesive backdrop to the design.
- Brecon boulders were also incorporated within the planting, adding form and structure while introducing subtle purple hues that contrasted beautifully with the surrounding greenery and flowers.
- Brecon building stone was used for the walling around the central feature, bringing depth, structure, and a natural warmth through its rich red and green tones.
- Kandla Grey Sandstone Setts were used to create a beautiful moongate — a circular opening in the wall that framed the monument beyond, adding depth and a moment of stillness to the garden’s flow.
- Imperial Grey Stackers were selected for the flooring, offering a subtle, complementary base that didn’t distract from the rest of the build.
Behind the Scenes and Show Highlights
We were invited to visit the site during the construction phase — and it was a real eye-opener. The scale, detail, and coordination involved in building these show gardens is nothing short of incredible. From the stonework to the planting, every element is carefully planned and executed by true craftspeople and professionals working to tight deadlines and high expectations.
A few of our team also had the chance to visit the show itself and see Moments of Reflection in its final form. Seeing the garden complete, surrounded by visitors and celebrated among the very best in British garden design, was a proud moment for all of us.
Proud to Be Involved
We’re incredibly proud that our stone was chosen for such a meaningful and prestigious space. It may be a small part of a much larger effort, but knowing that our Brecon Stone, sandstone setts, and stackers helped shape Moments of Reflection is something we’ll always remember.
A huge thanks to the entire team behind the stand — Maximillian Design, Hardwood Landscapes, and Gecko Stonework — for letting us be a part of the process.
