MILES STONE AT RHS CHELSEA | THE VERDICT

What a first RHS Chelsea it has been for us! We’re so pleased the RHS awarded us a Silver Gilt at our first attempt – and after listening to the judge’s feedback we were not far away from that coveted gold medal. The judges loved the plant selections in combination with the beautiful natural stone hard landscaping materials we supplied. At the show we had a lot of comments from attendees about the wall – many of them wanting to re-create it at home! We think that the garden’s ability to be re-created in a home environment was a key factor in how well it was received by the public. Many of Chelsea’s gardens are a little impractical in real life applications. Ours, although still packed with design flair and interesting features, would represent a beautiful real world domestic garden.

Words from our garden designer Michelle Brown;

One of the big inspirations for me during the initial stages was the concept of time. Through this garden we want to celebrate both 70 years of teaching land based professionals at Kingston Maurward College and also look toward future generations. Following this concept led to me using a lot of circles and circular shapes which not only symbolise time but happen to work beautifully in compact gardens. The central cupola provides a focal point to the garden and creates a shelter but it’s also a decorative sundial. It’s industrial in its construction but delicate and beautiful to look at – it’s probably my favourite piece of the garden! When creating the design I also had this concept of innate well-being in mind. After the show this garden will be re-located to the cancer ward at Dorset County Hospital and I hope the planting and beautiful hard landscaping materials can provide a peaceful oasis there.
